A lovely weekend

First Day at New Job

I took another step towards my dream of working in the fashion industry and utilising my styling skills recently, when I started working at the fabulous Mint Condition in Rozelle. You can find me there two Saturdays a month.

It was a really great day – some of the customers I helped were looking for Great Gatsby outfits for costume parties, girls needing an evening dress for Saturday night, vintage and fashion obsessed young girls (I’m particularly fond of these) and people after a key piece in their wardrobe but with a vintage twist, like the woman who wanted a new winter coat but instead bought the most fabulous black angora cape. I was very well behaved and only bought myself a vintage silk scarf, which I’m passing on to a new friend going through chemo – her need is greater than mine – and a brand new Mela Purdie layering tee in the most amazing raspberry colour.

On Saturday afternoon, I was lucky enough to attend my very first Working Mums Masterclass, where I learnt all about cyber security, how to live a greener life, how to motivate yourself to exercise and about the balance between stress and nutrition.

I’m in awe of Penny Webb and the amazing community she has created, with her live and online events for working women. I can’t believe it took me this long to get to my first event – I’ll be queuing up for the next one!

When I got home, I was greeted with a delicious barbecued dinner and a bunch of poppies and roses, selected by Boyo, bless his little cotton socks. I have the most amazing blokefolk. I’m not quite sure what I’ve done to deserve them.

Australian Museum

I missed my blokefolk on Saturday, so Boyo and I had a special Mama-Boyo trip on Sunday morning. We set off early to visit the Australian Museum. It’s an amazing place and we’re so lucky to have it just down the road. A few years ago, we had an annual membership because we visited so often. Boyo, as a preschooler, could pronounce pachycephalosaurus but still said “bir” for bird. We seemed to spend every weekend either at Taronga Zoo or the Australian Museum. Sometimes both!

We hadn’t visited the Australian Museum in nearly a year. We went to Taronga Zoo recently – I wonder if it was that visit which triggered Boyo’s desire to go the Museum? It was gorgeous to see his nostalgic memories kick in as we wandered around the museum, looking at the gems and minerals, the skeletons, the birds and insects and, of course, the dinosaurs. We adore the 3D light display touch table and, although we know it is going to happen, the great white shark leaping from the table gets us every time!

Mama Boyo Day Out

Next up, a wander through Hyde Park, where we spotted a Brooklyn NY photo exhibition in shipping containers, a bride at the gorgeous fountain – where we had some of our wedding photos taken – and some gloriously blue sky.

We also enjoyed a little treat at Max Brenner, the little one tucked away in the David Jones concourse. Strawberries, chocolate licks, strawberry white chocolate frappe, chocolate babka and Italian milk thick hot chocolate – the recipe for a perfect Mama Boyo date day!

Skater Boyo

After our outing, we had a quiet afternoon with the Welshman at home, then headed off to Manly for my inaugural skateboarding lesson. Unfortunately, Boyo had a whole lesson all to himself, as I succumbed to the sinus infection that I thought I had kicked last week. It’s back with a vengeance, and now has an added cough. I discovered to my horror that vomiting in public must be a common occurrence in Manly, after I coughed so much I threw up in a bin, and no one even noticed. Oh, the humanity. Skating was off for me but Boyo enjoyed a whole hour with his favourite dudes from Skater HQ.

The Welshman and I snuggled up and watched A Five Year Engagement on Sunday night. The perfect ending to a lovely weekend. It was almost as funny watching the Welshman watch the movie, as the actual very funny movie. We saw it last year when I was too sick to celebrate our tenth wedding anniversary with dinner at Aria. We had an old school Saturday night movie date instead with a modern twist – a mobile bar was wheeled into the theatre and the Welshman availed himself of it. Hence my amusement in watching him watch the movie that he couldn’t remember!

I’d like to thank the Welshman, hot chocolate, Betadine Sore Throat Gargle and Panadol Osteo for getting me through my very busy weekend. Big smooshy kisses to Boyo for my beautiful flowers and his fabulous company on our Mama Boyo excursion.

A weekend involving vintage clothes, styling clients, inspiring women, my beloved blokefolk, the Museum, Manly Beach, Max Brenner hot chocolate, rococo roses and some one on one time with my little dude is a good weekend indeed.

I hope you had a lovely weekend too!
