As you are reading this fabulous post by B Being Cool, one of my Guest Post Guest Stars, I am most likely sunning myself in LA. I’ve either shopped, am planning to shop or am actually shopping. Some things never change!
Hi, my name is B. I write over at bbeingcool.com. I love to write about fashion and I love to put together lookbooks that give gals like me and you ideas on how to use what we have and to guide our shopping purchases (this saves me a LOT of time and my credit card sighs with relief 😉 )
Today, I am sharing some tips on how to wear ‘Denim After Dark’. Denim is one of the most amazing fabrics in that it can be worn for almost any occasion, depending on the style and cut of the jean. Denim can be a casual girl’s best friend, and it can also be worn to paint the town red!
Firstly, let’s talk about jeans that can be dressed up:
- Dark jeans – go for dark and go for all the same colour, avoid too much of a ‘washed’ look. Black jeans are great too!
- Skinny Leg – it is really hard to dress up any other cut of jean. Boyfriend or wide leg jeans need just the right shoe and it is quite easy to get this wrong. A skinny leg jean will give you a fabulous silhouette and also helps show off fabulous, pretty shoes. If you do not own a pair of skinny dark jeans – you need to hunt until you find some. They will change your life (well, your wardrobe anyway.)
- Cut & Length- you need to find jeans that are cut just right for your shape. There is a world of difference between jeans and the way they are cut, some jeans are made for very very slim legged gals (Country Road make very skinny legged skinny jeans) other companies make jeans that allow for a bit of booty action (Esprit and NYDJ are famous for thier trunk space.) To wear jeans after dark, they need to be JUST right – if they are too long, get them altered.
Okay … now let’s look at some ways to style those fabulous jeans you have:
A really easy way to dress up jeans is to add a blazer. Imagine a cute top under this blazer with a pussy-bow or a simple shell top. Add some heels, a fabulous matching clutch and accessories and you are good to go.
This outfit could take you: out for dinner, drinks after hours for work, an art gallery opening or even a casual business meeting. It is polished, pretty and definitely ready for some night time glass clinking!
Monochrome is SO in right now. It is everywhere! Why not add some monochrome to your dark denims? Add a cute black and white top (this one has a leather collar) and some fabulous black and white accessories. I had to add a pop of red, how could I not add these fabulous red pointy heels? You could also wear black or white shoes for a truly monochromatic look.
This outfit could take you: dancing with some gal pals, dinner with someone handsome, cocktails with the in-crowd or even a dressed up shopping trip somewhere fabulous (like LA – wink Kimba!)
Floaty is always pretty… and kaftans are everywhere in stores near you. Wearing something floating atop your skinny jeans really balances out the proportions, big on top, skinny on the bottom. Add a shell top, a tank top or a glitzy sparkly T under this kaftan for lots of fun and fabulous looks. Adding colour for night time is so fresh and fun, a real surprise for those of us who live in a world of black. Add some cork wedges and bright and breezy accessories for a really pretty look.
This outfit could take you: out to dinner with a man friend, a night time exhibition, the movies (when coffee or cocktails are on the plan for afterwards), a stroll along a boardwalk somewhere nice.
Peplum is a great way to add shape and glamour to your skinny jeans. I love this look, the black and gold accessories are so classic but cool; don’t you love the fun little domino clutch? Strappy gold sandals can really take an outfit from day to night in a snap. Imagine freshly pedicured feet with stunning red toe nails in those sandals! Also – in those shoes, you will be able to keep dancing on and on on that dance floor!
This outfit could take you: dancing the night away, a dinner in a fairly posh restaurant, a first date when you want to impress, a concert or a party.
The very best way to dress up your jeans is to add some sequins. There is no denying that this is the quickest and most dazzling way. Add some pointy shoes, art deco accessories and a cute clutch and you will be shimmering away all night long. This simple T would be a fabulous find, for my shape, I would need something a little more boxy to wear with skinny jeans, you just need to find the right T for your shape.
This outfit could take you: dancing the night away, dining somewhere lovely, partying with champagne or hosting a cocktail party on your deck.
I hope that this collection of lookbooks has inspired you to not turn your nose up at your trusty skinny jeans next time you feel the need to dress up! Jeans are versatile, hard wearing, flattering and easy to care for. A good pair will give you years of wearing pleasure!
