Gift Guide for Big Oh Birthdays

Forty Thirty Header

Guess what! I’m celebrating my Big Four Oh My Gods this year. I know, right. A complete surprise. I haven’t been banging on about it at all. Well, maybe just a little bit. Once or twice. Perhaps.

In August, I turn the Big Four Oh. My lovely sister-in-law K is celebrating her 30th birthday in the same month. My middle bro, otherwise known as Unka Munka in this house, obviously has excellent taste. His favourite (and, um, only) sister and girlfriend are both Leos.

Now, you may think that providing a gift guide is a little self-serving. In fact, it is extremely selfless of me. Say what? Work with me here. The aforementioned lovely K is a fellow celebrator of the Birthday Festival phenomenon. And my aforementioned lovely middle bro is not.

I’ve provided this awesome list of excellent birthday present ideas to steer my bro into the direction that is expected of him. Coincidentally, it may also provide relevant people with gift ideas for myself, should they be so inclined.

I call that a win win!

Mudbird Ceramics – I recently discovered this gorgeous creative ceramic business, all handmade in my hometown of Christchurch by the lovely Gillian Weavers. She makes a beautiful range of dishes and jewellery, ceramic tags, bespoke occasion pieces for celebrations, and my personal favourite, the gorgeous Emerge Commemoration range, made using silt from the liquefaction caused by the ongoing series of Christchurch earthquakes. Mudbird ships internationally and offers gift vouchers too. Gorgeous Kiwiana.

Red Phoenix Emporium – Extravagant handmade jewellery, clothing and gifts from all over the world, founded by two generations of the fabulously-named Phoenix sisters. I have some of their gorgeous pieces, and they always add a shot of sheer glamour to my outfits. I got a little sneak peek of the upcoming Covet Collection this morning on Instagram, and immediately declared that this much gorgeousness was ideal birthday gift material, especially for a special Big Oh birthday. Gift vouchers can be made available via special request. The Covet Collection launches in June.

So, there you have it. Some fabulous gift ideas for a lovely lady in your life to make her go “Oh!”, whether it’s a Big Oh birthday or not. How could a birthday fail to become a Festival of Celebration with such thoughtful gifts as these?
