The Welshman and his twin brother Grods celebrated their birthday this week, from opposite sides of the world.
They were surprise twins, who shocked their parents by arriving six weeks early. Their due date was around Valentine’s Day but they apparently preferred to celebrate the New Year.
Their father had time to fit in one last business trip, seeing as it was an uncomplicated second pregnancy. The boys had other plans however, and the Welshman arrived. 23 minutes later, Grods arrived too.
Nanna Margaret, who recently celebrated her 101st birthday bless her little cotton socks, was charged with ringing the new father and breaking the news gently. How she actually broke the news has entered family lore – “it’s twins!”.
Grods was all wrapped up in winter woollies in England, whilst the Welshman was kicking back in togs and a t shirt with a glorious view of Hot Water Beach in the Coromandel Peninsula in gorgeous New Zealand.
They had a few things in common though – family singing, candles and cake, along with lots and lots of love.
As we’re on holiday, I had to raid the local dodgy supermarket for the cake – and came up seriously short with mock cream featuring heavily in the selections. So, a Kiwi classic, from Canterbury no less, Ernest Adams Christmas plum pudding was pressed into service as a birthday cake, and a citronella candle doubled as a birthday candle. As you do.
Happy birthday boys! Love you lots xxx
