How to wear dresses that are too short | wear over a skirt

Wear dresses that are too short over a skirt.  Easy!

  • A pencil skirt worn under a full skirted dress gives a super cute peplum look.
  • Wearing a full skirt underneath a full skirted dress gives the effect of a contrasting banded full skirt.
  • Layer a too short dress style like a kaftan or T shirt dress over a coordinating or contrasting slip to keep you nice.

I’ve teamed my too short Sportsgirl lace dress with a Country Road striped jersey pencil skirt.

How to wear dresses that are too short | wear over jeggings

Team dresses that are too short with skinny jeggings.  As denim is a neutral, you can work it back with anything you like!

I’ve teamed mine with a floral dress from Shabby Sisters and leopard accessories.

How to wear dresses that are too short | wear over leggings

The classic solution for how to wear dresses that are too short is leggings.  Every girl should have a good quality pair of black opaque leggings in her wardrobe.  Add some fun to your style with patterned and coloured leggings.

I’ve teamed a pair of Tightology leggings with a Bohemian Traders T shirt dress (gifted) for this look.

How to wear dresses that are too short | wear over jeans

Add some casual chic to your too short dresses by wearing them with jeans.  Add a 70s vibe by wearing flared jeans.

I do the legging, jean and the sneaky short, but I have never done the pencil skirt. I’ll have to give it a try. What a clever cookie. Zoe xxReplyCancel

Love this post! As a tallie, many of my dresses are too short for daily life with two littlies. In fact, I have a few that were labelled ‘dresses’ but that I’ve only ever worn as tees! The pencil skirt. That’s a new one. Looks fab. Thanks!ReplyCancel

I’m not tall but not short. Kinda average, I guess. And I am having trouble finding dresses that aren’t too short! Must be so hard when you’re taller!ReplyCancel

You are speaking directly to me today Kim-Marie. I struggle so badly with short dress syndrome. I am totally on board with the jegging and jean but have never thought to do pencil skirt underneath! Genius girl. Thank you. Bron xReplyCancel

I am a shortie so rarely have this problem although some offerings from – shall we say “younger” – outlets are pushing it! I am defs all about the good quality legging and I have also done a longer skirt to add boof.ReplyCancel

Love love love the cute peplum look with the clever pencil skirt!! Looks great with the lace. Great tips xoxReplyCancel

  • Mica - 28 October 2015 - 9.07 am

    Great tips! 🙂

I’m petite so a short dress is rarely a problem for me, haha! I do have a couple freebies that are more tunics than dresses, and I wear shorts underneath or belt them over jeans.

I really like your first lace dress, I have a similar one from Jeanswest I wore the other day!ReplyCancel

  • Sonia from Sonia Styling - 28 October 2015 - 7.13 am

These are seriously good tips! I have no doubt we all have at least one or two dresses hanging in our wardrobe that we don’t wear because they’re just that bit too short. Especially love the pencil skirt styling idea and adore you in the tunic/jeans ensemble. xReplyCancel
