Do you have a go to outfit? For when you’re busy, running errands, driving, getting shiz done, transporting people, carrying stuff, and you need to be comfy and cute.
My go to outfit when I can’t figure out what else to wear is always a dress. It’s most of the hard work done for me. But on a busy day when I need to be practical, I have a Mama on the Run outfit.
Mama on the Run Outfit
Here’s my go to failsafe outfit for those days when you don’t have the time to bother – but don’t want to look like you didn’t bother!
- Oversized skinny jeans
- Tunic top
- Slip on shoes
- Vintage scarf tied as a hairbow
- Oversized leather tote
Mama on the Run Outfit | oversized skinny jeans
A pair of oversized skinny jeans is my Mama on the Run outfit base piece. Oversized skinny jeans sounds like a misnomer, right?
The trick is to find a pair of skinny jeans with a decent amount of stretch that are half to one size too big. Not so big that they’re going to fall down, but not so fitted that you can’t bend and stretch and move comfortably.

Mama on the Run Outfit | tunic top
The next piece of my Mama on the Run outfit is a short sleeved tunic. Long enough to cover my bum and tum when I’m bending over, running errands, with arm and shoulder coverage to sort out any bra strap issues.
A neckline that means I’m not flashing anyone is a good option too.
My tunic top is thrifted from the opshop and features little bunnies on the print – I had to have it, right?
Mama on the Run Outfit | comfy slip on shoes
A pair of comfy shoes is an essential for my Mama on the Run outfit. A pair of slip on shoes that have built in support are the perfect choice. They look smarter than a pair of trainers, yet are almost as comfy, and can be kicked on and off in a hurry.
A trainer / ballet flat hybrid is a great option, as is a pair of Mox (especially on a rainy day), or a preppy loafer.
I’m wearing Ziera ballet flats with built in support.
Mama on the Run Outfit | scarf hairbow
A vintage souvenir scarf tied as a hairbow is my signature go to – and is just perfect for my Mama on the Run outfit. It disguises dirty hair in style, keeps your hair off your face and adds a retro cute je ne sais quoi to your outfit.

Mama on the Run Outfit | oversized tote
The final essential for a Mama on the Run outfit is an oversized tote. One you can sling over your arm and access easily – no buckles or zips to slow you down. Plus enough room to stuff full of the errands you need to run! Parcels to be posted, items to return, bills to be paid, plus all that kid stuff you wind up carrying. I still tote stuff for my very-nearly 11 year old!
Pop your essentials like phone, keys and wallet in a little clutch with a wrist strap or a cross body strap for easy access.
I’m carrying my Anizoe leather tote.
Accessorise with a watch, and a slick of tinted lipgloss that you can apply one handed as you’re walking to your next errand, and you’re good to go.
