New Year Resolutions | bring it on

New Year Resolutions

I’m not really into New Year Resolutions, just like I’m not really into diets. I try to live in moderation and eat in moderation and not beat myself up when I fail. I just have the goal of being the best me I can be.  I mean, who else can I be?

New Year Resolutions | Health

In brief – continue drinking more water, step up gentle exercise to increase strength, concentrate on eating at mealtimes to reduce snacking, and significantly reduce alcohol consumption to increase my mobility.

As part of my New Year Resolutions, I’m focusing on my health.  I plan to continue with my Mindful Living plan – looking at ways of thinking more about what I’m doing, eating, drinking, moving, thinking, living.  Immediate goals are to continue with my two litres of water a day habit.

Not only has the extra hydration helped me feel a whole heap better, I’ve been able to physically differentiate the feeling of thirst from hunger and have improved my incidental eating.

Nikki from Styling You wrote about her 2013 Health Story and living with the autoimmune condition, Hashimotos, and it really resonated with me.  I have spent most of my 30s living with an autoimmune disorder – Undifferentiated Connective Tissue Disease.  To cut a long story short, it is like having rheumatoid arthritis.  My compromised immune system means constant low level illness and lethargy are common, and I’m more likely to wind up with a sinus infection from a common cold.  Years of being unable to exercise has led to loss of muscle tone and decrease in general body strength.

I am currently one of the lucky ones who has officially gone into remission, but the after effects still affect me and my life on a daily basis, as well as those around me.  Add in the added complications of PCOS and chronic oedema, and I’m thankful I’m not a horse, or I would have been turned into a glue stick a long time ago!

Like Nikki, I’ve learnt that going hard at the exercise actually creates pain and a worsening of my symptoms.  I’ve developed my own little routine, including walking laps in a swimming pool, stepping up my incidental exercise – such as walking the school run, and walking the 7km Bay Run when I can – and not beating myself up when I have to acknowledge that I can’t.

A kind neighbour has lent me her VibroDisc machine whilst she’s overseas for a month.  I was sceptical but the difference it has made in a few days’ use is incredible.

Another of my New Year Resolutions that will be difficult!  I’m going alcohol free for a few months – as much as possible.  Sydney summers are difficult for me as the humidity creates swollen and painful joints.  Add alcohol to the mix and it’s not just a hangover that causes pain the following day.  Luckily, I’m still lots of fun completely sober!

I have to recognise that I don’t concentrate on my eating as well as I should.  I tend to forget to eat either breakfast or lunch and find myself foraging for empty carbs, sugar and salt in the afternoon – setting a very bad after school example for Boyo.  Making sure I eat a protein rich healthy breakfast and lunch every day is an achievable goal.

I don’t want to lose weight but I do recognise that whilst I’m still within the BMI for my height, it is getting closer to the top of the range.  I want to gain strength and endurance, not fit into a certain pair of jeans.

New Year Resolutions | Kimba Likes

In brief – keep up the good work and attend ProBlogger 2014

I’m absolutely thrilled with my fabulous Kimba Likes community and the opportunities that have come my way since I commence full time blogging.  My steady growth has taken a huge leap at the end of the year, much to my delight.  I’d love to continue this growth into 2014.

Nothing makes me happier than when I get a comment or an email from someone letting me know that I’ve inspired them or made them feel better about themselves.  I write about pretty fluffy stuff – shopping, family fun, makeup, skincare, clothes, shoes, recipes, daily life – and I don’t pretend to be anything other than what I am.

The New Year resolutions I have for Kimba Likes is that in 2014, I’m going to recognise more often that knowing that something I’ve suggested has made someone feel better about themselves on the inside because of the way they look on the outside is a pretty damned fine thing!

I would really love to be able to fund my trip to ProBlogger Training Event this year from sponsorship opportunities on Kimba Likes.  A girl has to set some goals in order to have something to work towards after all.  The event is likely to be held in late August – the perfect birthday present for me, don’t you think?  A fabulous addition to my list of New Year Resolutions too.

I’m finally going to launch my Kimba Likes Boutique in early 2014 – so keep an eye out!

New Year Resolutions

New Year Resolutions | Shopping

In brief – no shopping until my birthday in August

I need to face up to some hard facts.  I am no longer paid a regular monthly wage.  I shop too much.  I have more shoes, clothes, bags and accessories than any one girl really truly needs.

I have made a commitment to the Welshman and to myself that I will not buy anything that I strictly don’t need until August 2014.  August just happens to be my birthday so I will have a set sum to shop ’til I drop as my birthday present for achieving this goal.

Looking after myself and my health is something you would expect to find on a New Year Resolutions list.  I need to stop being selfish and look after my family’s financial health.

My wardrobe is ridiculously overpacked, so I will be undergoing an extensive cull – hello Kimba Likes Boutique!

Of course, there are some things that I will need during this time.  I’m able to replace things that I don’t have a duplicate of in my wardrobe.  I will be replacing my skincare and makeup essentials as required.

There will still be lots of shopping on Kimba Likes – but I will be wearing my enabler hat and bringing you my picks and tips and bargain finds and just window shopping for myself.

To be honest, I think I’d rather swim with sharks than give up shopping, but I am a responsible adult and I need to recognise that I Shop.  Too.  Much. Bring on the New Year Resolutions!

I’d love to hear your thoughts.  Do you make New Year Resolutions?

I love your resolutions Kimba and I await to see the boutique later this year!

I too am trying to reduce/restrict my shopping. My wardrobe is stuffed to the gills with things I don’t wear often enough. If I hit my fitness goals this year, hopefully I’ll feel much better about wearing all of it!

Good luck with your goals – they seem very sensible and achievable. Except maybe the shopping one – there is no way I could manage that! Though you are doing it for such a good reason I am sure it will be worth it!ReplyCancel

I made a New Years Resolution not to shop for all of 2013 and only lasted three months 🙁 But I did lose 9kg so that was my excuse for buying new clothes!
This year I haven’t really made any. Good luck!ReplyCancel

No I don’t but I am going to walk in the water more, like you Kimba I have arthritis in too many joints to count and I have had a total knee replacement which did not go according to plan and I now have a metal allergy to the prothesis so on top of pain I have major swelling and now I have problems with my right hand they think it is a disease called RSD which causes inflammation in the joint and there is no cure so I have upped my fruit and veggie intake In the form of smoothies with coconut water to see if it helps and even if it doesn’t it is good for me right? I also am doing more meditation and mindfulness techniques when I am in pain I find they help a Lot.I also eat pretty well do not drink much alcohol and be very careful with treats.Good luck Kim-Marie with the clothes shopping ban, I want to be a more ethical shopper and will try and swap clothes again and of the op shop does not count xReplyCancel

I’ve written a list which I’ve separated into 4 topics (me, home, work and blog) and have a few dot points under each. I need to revisit it in the next couple of days, as I really want to make sure I’ve simplified my goals as much as possible and also to ensure I’m not putting pressure on myself – I want to enjoy life and do what makes me happy this year! I think your resolutions are fantastic and I’m totally on Team Kimba to help make sure you achieve them!ReplyCancel
