Perfect Summer Shorts

Summer means it’s time to put your tights away, only wear jeans if they’re cut off (and hopefully not masquerading as denim knickers) and embrace shorts!  I’ve been on the lookout and I’m sharing two of my recent purchases.

Nikki from Styling You recently wrote about how to wear summer shorts and pants.  She is not a fan of the three quarter pant, especially the wide legged variety, and I couldn’t agree more.  They are unflattering, mumsy and make us look not only stumpy-legged but bigger than we are.  Why on earth would we want to do that?!

I’ve found two pairs of shorts that will work beautifully for me this summer.  They’re flattering and comfortable, yet stylish.  In Sydney humidity, sometimes pants are far more comfortable than a skirt.  Shall I whisper the word chafing?

If shorts really aren’t your thing, then my solution is to find some flattering harem-style silk pants with a cuff and wear them with a fitted vest and a pile of long necklaces.  A drapey silk scarf can be worn over the shoulders to cover up upper arms, if that’s of concern to you, and doubles as a great way to add some sun protection over your shoulders and decolletage.  Imogen from Inside Out Style has a great post on how to fashion a shrug from a silk scarf.

Alternatively, find some fab skinny-style chinos or cotton pants and roll them to the flattering part of your leg, just above your ankle.  Fox in Flats has some great tips from Peter Morrissey on how to cuff your chinos.  OK, it’s for blokes but works just as well for the girls!  You can do the same with boyfriend chinos using my tips on how to peg your jeans.

Here are my picks for the perfect summer shorts.

Country Road Stretch Knee Length Shorts $69.95

Country Road Stretch Knee Length Shorts – $69.95

I loved my Country Road skinny pants (in a jean cut but made of thin cotton fabric) so much this year.  They’ve been a real wardrobe staple and a great way of injecting a bit of colour into my wardrobe.  I have them in cobalt and orange.  Imagine my delight when I found these Stretch Knee Length Shorts in Country Road.  They’re pretty much my favourite summer cotton pants in a shorts version.  They come in a fabulous array of colours, but my picks are the navy blue and the emerald green.

These are a little more fitted on me than the model.  Something to do with thighs, I think.

The back view is flattering too, with well-situated pockets and proper belt loops.  I’m wearing navy blue ones today with a silk loose printed sleeveless top in a bright blue.  The combination of the floaty top in cool silk with the fitted shorts is a flattering silhouette and is keeping me cool and comfortable on a very sticky Sydney day.

Sussan Botanical Print Shorts $59.95

These gorgeous Sussan Botanical Print Shorts are my dressier option for the summer – perfect for smarter barbecues and maybe even to work with heeled sandals, silk blouse and cropped linen jacket.  They’re also perfect for dressing down with flat leather sandals and a casual top.  The flattering cut lends itself to a tucked in tee or blouse, as well as floaty tops.

I’m also on the lookout for a pair of above the knee silky paperbag waisted tie-belted floaty shorts to wear with silk camisoles and heels for summer date nights with the Welshman.  However, I can’t find any that are long enough for me.  I’m too old for hot pants!  If you find some in your travels, please give me a yell!

Will you be wearing shorts this summer?  Where did you find your favourites?  Do tell!

I love longer shorts. Hides my varicose on the inside of my leg above my knee! I could use a couple more pair, actually. I’m trying to skate thru summer on 3 pairs of shorts (1 denim, 1 white, 1 black) and a couple of tank tops.ReplyCancel

Yup, I’ve got spider veins which are just on the hem of shorter shorts. Looks fine when I stand up but as soon as I sit down, it’s like putting a frame around them!ReplyCancel

I’ve been getting about in stuff shorter than these simply because they were all I could find. I imagine my delight when I uncovered just above the knee style in Target! Finally designers are waking up to the fact that some of us don’t want to wear bum cheek creeping hot pants.ReplyCancel

Just about the knee, without the widening effect of a wide leg and no bloody tummy pleats – the holy grail of shorts!ReplyCancel

I’m not a shorts person, but I love those CR ones. I hate my knees so tend to wear skirts to hide themReplyCancel

If you don’t like them, send them back 🙂 A huge range of colours too. I wore mine in the weekend and they were fab 🙂ReplyCancel
