Prints and Patterns | Guest Post

Sarah from For the Style Seeking Girl is today’s Guest Post Guest Star whilst I’m on holiday.  She’s talking about Prints and Patterns.  Over to you, Sarah!

An easy way to add some flair, make outfits stand out and have fun with fashion

I love nothing more than playing around with an outfit, styling it so that, although it may be inspired by someone, it has a unique twist making it my own. The use of prints and patterns is an amazing way to achieve this. Either using tiny splashes to accessorise an outfit or bold, colourful statement pieces for a look-at-me outfit.

Fashion is meant to be fun, using different prints and patterns is a fantastic way to enjoy your outfits and look fantastic at the same time. For anyone who doesn’t regularly use prints or patterns or isn’t sure about it, I would suggest starting small – adding an accessory such as bangles, scarves, headbands or belts. As you feel more comfortable using different patterns you can start wearing bolder statement pieces.

If you like the classic, sleek look – create your outfit around the print. Use complementing colours or neutrals for a well put together and elegant look. For example tailored pants with a floral peplum and a black blazer. Or take a risk, create an edgy, extravagant look – go bold – splash together leather, leopard print and red heels for extra sass or wow factor. Or even better, mix your prints, when I do this I try to have a component to tie it all in, whether it is a common colour involved in the print or pattern or using accessories to create a balance.

Have fun with it! Smile and be confident– I believe you can pull anything off with confidence. I recently have purchased a few pairs of patterned pants and leggings, I never thought I would but I have and I love them! I have worn them when I am having a busy day and have limited time to put an outfit together.

Five prints or patterns to add instant impact to your wardrobe

Prints and Patterns | Floral

A simple way to create a feminine look. The obvious choice is a cute summer dress or maxi dress. Dress it up with blazers, leather jackets or boots, clusters of bracelets. For something different try a pair of floral pants or a bright blazer over a little black dress. For a subtle look try small flowers – the bigger the flower, the more it stands out!

Celebrity Style: Lauren Conrad, Alexa Chung, Sarah Jessica Parker

Prints and Patterns | Polka Dots

Polka dots, whether big or small have been on or off trend for decades. I am partial to some dotty fever, I love polka dot dresses, cardigans and headbands. I love the classic combination of black and white with splashes of red to create a classic, 1950s style type outfit. For a streamlined look pair a polka dot blouse with a pencil skirt.

Celebrity Style:  Princess Kate, Jessica Alba, Drew Barrymore

Prints and Patterns | Plaid and Checks

There are so many variations in this pattern – gingham, tartan, checks … Use a flannelette inspired shirt with jeans and boots for some theme dressing, pair with leather, buy a shirt-dress and pair with heels and a belt for some glamour. This pattern is great for a casual look but I love to find pieces to wear for a night out. For a contrasting look use feminine pieces and pair with gold costume jewellery.

Celebrity Style:  Katie Holmes, Mary-Kate Olsen, Liv Tyler

Prints and Pattern | Animal Print

Animal or tribal prints are fabulous ways to add edge and some rock chic like glamour to an outfit. There are many options available including leopard, zebra and Aztec prints. Play around with textures including faux fur, feathers and fuzzy fabric. Add a hint of the print with scarves, gloves, hats, belts or headbands/headscarves. Pair a scarf with jeans and a chambray shirt for a classic, brunch with the girls look. Signature pieces will add instant impact and make you stand out from the crowd – shoes, bags, pants and jackets. Take the risk and go a little wild!

Celebrity Style:  Khloe Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez, Fergie

Prints and Patterns | Geometric

I am having so much fun with this pattern trend at the moment! It is fun, stands out and can be slightly outrageous. Play around with shapes like circles, squares, rectangles, stars and pentagons. Pair geometric pants or leggings with a statement shirt, statement necklace and ankle boots for a right on trend look! Wear a bold dress for a night out or event, pair with red lips and a big smile.

Celebrity Style: Kate Beckinsale, Beyonce, Malin Akerman

I hope you have enjoyed this post and welcome some prints or patterns into your wardrobe – if you haven’t already! The more you wear them the more relaxed you will be about mixing prints. Thank you, Kimba for this opportunity to guest post on Kimba Likes. Happy Styling, Sarah {For the Style Seeking Girl} Xo

Hi, I am Sarah – the creator & writer behind For the Style Seeking Girl

‘Kooklah’ is my blogging identity, meaning ‘living doll’ in Greek. My aim is to pass on my own passion for beauty, fashion & styling to others, assisting them to feel beautiful, be confident & sparkle. I’m a dreamer who looks for meaning in life. I love dresses, high heels, sequins, glitter, leather, costume jewellery, topknots, statement pieces, clashing prints/textures/styles, winged eyeliner, blushed cheeks, made up eyes & brows. For the Style Seeking Girl celebrates that fashion changes, offering simple examples & techniques that can be used to style an outfit from girly to grunge to casual (always with a hint of sparkle).
