Trans Seasonal Capsule Wardrobe

The all together fabulous Kim from Allconsuming is one of my heroes.  Seriously.  Her honest writing about her mental health gave me the final push I needed to get off my butt and finally put the psychologist referral letter for my PMDD  to good use.

Kim’s writing is sublime, she’s bitingly funny and if you ever need to laugh until you can’t breathe, just check out her Pinterest board entitled Things That Shit Me.

Recently, I was procrastifluffing about online when I read a post on Kim’s Facebook timeline about online shopping.

Here’s her simple shopping list:

Here’s what I want – a couple of nice crisp shirts – a white and maybe a check or somesuch, some lightweight jumpers/knits to go over the top for a bit of a layered look and some new jeans. It shouldn’t be that hard.

Seems like it should be pretty easy, right?  Shopping is relatively easy.  You find a top that looks like it will be OK, add to cart and hey ho PayPal, it’s delivered to your door.  What could be more fun?

For many of us, it is a complete nightmare.  The parcel arrives and the top fits.  But what can I wear over it if I get cold? What do I team it with? Can I wear it with these pants? Does it go with anything else I already own? What shoes do I wear?

Being the bossy boots I am, I made a few suggestions and then offered to make a Polyvore capsule wardrobe for Kim.  So nice of me yeah?  Not really.  I love Polyvore.  It’s my version of the Pokemon DS games Boyo loves.

Trans Seasonal Capsule Wardrobe | Kim from Allconsuming

capsule wardrobe
The beauty of putting together a capsule wardrobe shopping list in pictorial form is that you can see it.  Duh.  Seriously, work with me here.

Being able to see all the suggestions in one place really helps.  You can see that because I’ve worked with a simple neutral colour palette with a few pops of pink and aqua, the pieces all work with each other.

Kim can see at a glance if she has some pieces like this already in her wardrobe.  Having it all laid out makes it easy to see which pieces can be mixed and matched.

The pieces I’ve selected for this capsule wardrobe are classic basics that can be dressed up or down, and most can be layered over and under each other to create lots of different looks as the weather cools down.  The best bit?  Every single piece is under $90, and most are around $50.

Trans Seasonal Capsule Wardrobe | Tops

For Kim’s capsule wardrobe, I’ve steered away from crisp shirts in favour of crisp stripes and softer shapes.  Hi lo hems and curved shirt tail hems create shape whilst covering potential camel toe issues.  The more fitted basic pieces are designed for layering under the jumpers.  The jumpers with attached shirt tail hems do all the hard work for Kim.  Very tempted to Add to Cart myself!  I’ve also included a shirt, but in a soft print with a long line shape and rolled up sleeve detail.  The colours and pattern will work back beautifully with the pink striped jumper, for example.

Sussan | Stripe Combo Top | a two-for-one top with a scoop neck striped top with contrast curved shirt tail hem | $69.95

Sussan | Animal Print High Low Top | animal print, three quarter sleeve, scoop neck and high low hem | $59.95

Sussan | Classic High Low Top | plain grey top perfect for layering | $49.95

Sussan | Ruffle Hem Pullover | winter white v neck knit with ruffle hem which does the layering work for you | $89.95

Sussan | Stripe Zip Back Pullover | three quarter sleeves, pointelle knit side detailing, extended shoulders stripe pullover with zip back detail | $79.95

Sussan | Stripe Quilted Tunic | cuffed cap sleeves, extended curved hem, PU shoulder detail, perfect for layering | $89.95

Sussan | Shirt Tail Tank | relaxed fit, scoop neck, perfect layering basic with a shaped hem | $29.95

Sussan | Longline Tank | scoop neck, long line, fitted, perfect layering basic to cover bottoms under shorter tops | $24.95

Katies | 3/4 Ruched Sleeve Top | scoop neck, fitted, three quarter sleeves with ruching, perfect layering basic | $19.95

Katies | 3/4 Sleeve Print Shirt | lightweight, day to night, prettily pink print | $59.95

Trans Seasonal Capsule Wardrobe | Cardigans

I’ve selected a couple of smart cardigans for Kim’s capsule wardrobe, instead of the more obvious choice of a blazer.  The waterfall lapels are flattering for big boobs.  The cropped shape of the Katies cardigan and the colour block design of the Sussan long line cardigan help to create shape in a relatively shapeless piece.  Both pieces will layer beautifully over the tops and the soft silhouette is comfy to wear as well as flattering.

Katies | 3/4 Waterfall Cardigan | Cropped to fall just below waist, ribbed cuffs, elegant and flattering | $39.95

Sussan | Colour Block Cardi | the colour block and waterfall collar emphasises shape in an oversized piece | $89.95

Trans Seasonal Capsule Wardrobe | Pants

Jeans are the ultimate in casual chic but aren’t always fab for layering with their pockets, buttons, belt loops and tendency to fall down and / or create a muffin top.  The Katies Ultimate Slim Pants are going to feature heavily in my autumn-winter capsule wardrobe as their pull on design smooths lumps and bumps and eliminates the dreaded muffin top. Ponte pants, perhaps with leather detailing, would also look fab.

Katies | Ultimate Slim Pants | high rise sleek pull on pants in stretch fabric for the ultimate in flattering layering style | $49.95

Run Don’t Walk to your Katies outlet (if you’re lucky enough to have one near you) as I might have just bought myself three pairs for a tenner each.

Trans Seasonal Capsule Wardrobe | Shoes

Ankle boots, classic pumps, sandals, brogues and ballet flats would all work equally well with this capsule wardrobe.  I’ve selected comfort with a chic and classic twist for Kim’s busy schedule.

Sterling & Hyde | Leather Loafers | leather, two tone palette, as comfy as slippers yet stylishly chic | $89.95

Converse | Chuck Taylor All Stars | cult classic for a reason, comfily stylish | from $50 on sale

Trans Seasonal Capsule Wardrobe | Jewellery

I’ve selected some fun mix and match pieces for this capsule wardrobe from one of my favourite Australian design brands Ruby Olive.  They work beautifully together or as individual pieces, and are very well priced.

Love that similar designs are updated with new season colours for every Ruby Olive collection.

If you’d like some help pulling together an outfit or a capsule wardrobe, just let me know.  I’d love to help you out too.

Oh Kim I love looking at all this great fashion, maybe it’s my farming upbringing but for some reason I don’t feel I can own pretty, isn’t that strange? Now there’s a blog topic for me. I hope you are great lovely. I can’t wait to meet you at PB in August 🙂ReplyCancel

Of course you can own pretty! I am also a farmer’s daughter, from generations upon generations. When I was a little baby, my dad used to drive the tractor up and down the paddocks with my carrycot strapped on the side of the tractor, where the cast ewes would go, to get me to sleep!ReplyCancel
