Welcome to Wardrobe Wednesday. This week, I’m sharing my weekend style, and our lovely visit with friends-who-are-family.
We have the loveliest friends-who-are-family, whom we met through the Welshman’s work way back when. When you’re expats, you make your own family. It doesn’t mean you don’t miss your own family keenly, but you create connections with people you choose to be in your lives.
Over the years, we’ve celebrated Big Oh birthdays, births of babies, promotions and many festive celebrations together. We’ve also cried and comforted each other when times get tough. My Gorgeous Girl and I are luff-you-like-a-sister close. Our bromantic husbands go on curry, beer and band man-dates. Our kids consider each other unofficial cousins. I’m not going to lie. It’s pretty special and we’re very lucky.
Although we live around the corner from each other, we don’t always get the time to kick back and relax and just hang out. The school holidays were nearly over and clashing schedules meant we hadn’t caught up yet. Man, kids need their own Social Secretary these days! Oh wait … they’re usually called “Mum”.
Saturday afternoon. Three iKids on iDevices doing their Minecraft thing together. Champagne. Cheese and crackers. Steak dinner with delicious hot vegetable salads. Apple custard tart with strawberries, vanilla bean New Zealand ice cream par excellence and Blue Lemonade jelly. Not having to be the designated driver. It. Was. Awesome!
Having an early dinner means that the kids get to bed at their usual time but still feel like they’ve had a party. A little tip from me – a hangover is made infinitely worse by adding in the cacophony of an overtired child or two the following day!
Weekend Style | Lady in Red
For my weekend style, I wore a knit sleeveless button through Country Road dress in a vibrant red, layered over my Verily striped bamboo long sleeved slip. It was a little too cold to wear just that, and whilst I wanted to make a weekend style effort, I also wanted to channel some casual chic and be comfortable.
Instead of plumping for a more formal fitted blazer, I selected a fine gauge waffle Country Road waterfall cardigan in a dark red. I belted the cardigan with a chocolate brown Sportscraft leather belt at my natural waistline.
I experimented with belting the waterfall cardigan. I’ve chosen to wear it peplum style with the waterfall lapels pulled straight down, displaying the dress underneath. Another way it can be belted is by crossing it at the waist to create a straight hemline, rather than the almost handkerchief style I’m wearing here. The waterfall lapels can be tucked in on themselves, or left to drape loosely over the waistline.
I cannot tell you how vital long sleeve slips are to my winter weekend style. They add warmth without bulk, help to streamline the figure, and are endlessly versatile. They can be worn like T shirt dresses, over pants or leggings, under dresses or skirts. Plus they help keep you nice!
I accessorised with Leona Edmiston heart patterned opaque tights and Ziera patent leather toe capped suede ballet flats. The Ziera ballet flats are a bit special, as they have inbuilt arch support and a comfort sole without being chunky. These particular ballet flats are even more special as they are a limited edition pair designed to raise funds for the Christchurch Earthquake relief fund. A cause close to my heart, as it is my beloved hometown.
An Erstwilder bunny brooch from Vintage Pip added a touch of whimsical charm to my weekend style, and my Usual Suspects jewellery has expanded to include my Uberkate Uberfine Inner Heart necklace, Mimco lavender enamel bangle, Honeydew & Violet stacking rings and Avalise Jewellery vintage spoon bracelet. I kept my earrings prettily simple, wearing the pave diamond heart studs the Welshman gave me for our wedding.
As I was trying to keep myself from falling asleep on the sofa earlier in the day, I experimented with my new iPhone and some new camera apps. I was quite pleased with this sleepy girl photo, although the Fox in Flats Style Dare prompt for the day was Party Girl!
Newsflash! Champagne, even when it comes with a capital C, doesn’t help thumping headaches. Who knew? It was a fun experiment though. Honestly, the things I do for you!
