Beauty Reviews featuring gifted product from Boots Optiva, Rimmel London and RY Australia

Kimba Likes Beauty Duty

Time to pop my Beauty Blogger hat on again (it’s a vintage cocktail hat, just in case you were wondering).

I’m bringing you my beauty reviews of the latest products to cross my desk.

Kimba Likes Beauty Reviews - Boots Laboratories Optiva skincare range

Kimba Likes Beauty Reviews – Boots Laboratories Optiva skincare

Boots Laboratories have created the Optiva range, designed to boost hydration by helping to strengthen the skin’s moisture barrier.  It is suitable for sensitive skin, hypoallergenic and free from parabens.  Available at Amcal and Guardian pharmacies.

The Optiva products I trialled included their hero product, Optiva Aqua-Capture Serum, day cream, night cream, toner and cleanser.

Optiva Aqua-Capture Serum

My skin feels instantly nurtured upon application, and still feels hydrated at the end of the day.  This product is easy to apply, feels lovely on my skin, and absorbs easily.

Price – 30ml $24

Verdict – smoothing and soothing.  I would repurchase.

Optiva Daily Protecting Cream

A daily cream with a lightweight formulation and SPF15 protection, it helped to keep my skin balanced throughout the day.  Easily absorbed.

Price – 40ml $22

Verdict – I prefer a higher SPF level so I wouldn’t repurchase

Optiva Nourishing Night Cream

Designed to nourish and strengthen the skin whilst you sleep, this cream felt comfortable on my skin.

Price – 40ml $22

Verdict – At 42, my skin needs something with a bit more oomph.  A great option for younger skin.

Optiva Radiance Renew Foaming Wash

An oil-free, soap-free foaming wash in a pump dispenser bottle.  Gentle and designed to remove makeup and the daily grime without drying the skin.

Price – 150ml $14

Verdict – I didn’t really like this product. Foaming cleansers are something I stepped away from a long time ago, and I prefer micellar water, cream cleansers and oil cleansers.  I’ve passed this on to my friend’s tweenage daughter who is a fan.

Optiva Radiance Refresh Tonic

A good honest product that helps to remove the last traces of makeup, whilst making the skin feel comfortable and hydrated.

Price – 150ml $14

Verdict – I prefer to use a treatment essence for my toning step in my skincare regime. My skin responded well to using this toner followed by a treatment essence, so I would consider a repurchase.

Kimba Likes Beauty Reviews | Rimmel London cosmetics

Rimmel London constantly impress me with their high quality, low price cosmetics.  I do love a beauty bargain!

Rimmel London Magnif’eyes Double Ended Shadow & Liner

A double ended kohl pencil and eyeshadow crayon, this versatile product can create a full on dramatic smokey eye or just a simple defined eye.  It lasts well and doesn’t smudge. I was given Kissed by a Rose Gold and Back to Blacks.

Price – $16.95 click to shop

Verdict – It is my go to when I’m in a hurry but want to look made up. So easy to use and super versatile.  I’ve purchased myself Queens of a Bronzed Age.

Kimba Likes Beauty Duty - trialling Rimmel Kate Sculpting Palette and Dermalogica Hydrablur primer

Wearing Rimmel Kate Moss Sculpting Palette

Rimmel London Kate Sculpting Palette

Contouring is so hot right now. However, a full on contoured face is a bit much for every day.

The trick is a little strategic highlighting, a touch of lowlighting and a prettily flushed cheek.  The Kate Sculpting Palette has a soft shimmer powder for illuminating, a shimmer powder for contouring, and a pretty coral blush.

For a little everyday pretty, I love a defined cheek with a pop of colour on my cheekbones, blended out, and highlighted on top of the cheekbone, with a little lowlight action in the hollow of the cheek. I also add a little illumination down the bridge of my nose, on my cupid’s bow and on my forehead.  If I have a few more seconds, I shade a little lowlight powder high on my temples and down the sides of my nose, as well as under my jawline.

Price – $16.95 click to shop

Verdict – Perfect for travelling, this easy to use palette is an instant prettifier. I have spent three or four times (and more!) the money on similar palettes.  My only drawback is that the contour shade is a shimmer, as I prefer a matte powder.  I would repurchase.

Rimmel London Moisture Renew Universal Transparent Lipliner

Want to prevent lip bleeding and for your lip colour to last and last? A lip pencil is your answer.  However, sometimes you don’t want a coloured liner and that is where this little beauty comes into its own.  Formulated with shea butter for retaining moisture levels, this invisible lipliner lasts for hours.

It also works very well when applied outside the lipline, followed by a coloured lipliner on the lips, to prevent bleeding and smudging.

Price – $12.50 click to shop

Verdict – I would prefer a thicker pencil but I would definitely consider repurchasing, especially at the Rimmel price

Rimmel London Kate Conditioning Balm

It’s lip balm, but not as we know it!  Presented in the same packaging as a lipstick, it smooths and soothes lips whilst staying on the lips.  Many lip balms are difficult to apply with precision.  Not a big deal if you’re going to bed, but if you want to add some moisture to a made up lip, then it is kinda important.

Price – $12.50 click to shop

Verdict – Ooh, I love this!  La la love it!  Would I repurchase? I already have!

Rimmel London #Insta Flawless

More than a primer or a tinted moisturiser, this product adds a radiant glow and hydration.  It can be worn on its own for a light makeup look, or layered under foundation for a glowing made up look.

Price – $13.95 click to shop

Verdict – I’m super impressed.  It really does add a glow to the skin without making me look yellow like similar products have.  It is easy to apply and looks fab.  I will be repurchasing.

Rimmel London Fix & Protect Makeup Primer

Offering SPF 25, skin perfecting ingredients and anti-pollution filters, this primer is a step above a basic primer.

Price – 30ml $12.95 click to shop

Verdict – a good base primer with protection.  I would repurchase.

Rimmel London Lasting Finish by Kate Nude Collection

I was really intrigued to try the Kate Nude Collection lipsticks.  Unfortunately, I’m one of those girls who struggle to pull off a nude lip.  I tried, I really really did, but I didn’t like the paler nude shades on me.

Where they came into their own for me was as toning lipsticks.  To tone down a very boldly dark or bright lipstick shade.  I’ve also made them work by boosting my lip colour with a very bright lipliner.  The darkest shade 48 also worked for me as a 90s berry brown shade.

The lipstick lasts well and feels lovely on the lips.

Price – $12.95 click to shop

Verdict – a lovely lipstick but not in my shades.  I won’t repurchase these.

Kimba Likes Beauty Reviews - Dermalogica Hydrablur Primer from RY Australia

Kimba Likes Beauty Reviews | Dermologica Hydrablur Primer

I’m addicted to primers and correctors.  They make my makeup work smarter, not harder.  Rather than piling on a load of makeup in an attempt to disguise lines, dark shadows and dull skin, using correctors means I can wear light makeup and have flawless skin. Well, as flawless as is possible for a woman in her 40s.

The Dermologica Hydrablur primer minimises the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, disguises enlarged pores, mattifies oily skin in my T zone and leaves my skin looking silky smooth with a little glow.

It blurs lines and pores, hydrates and brightens my skin, not to mention helps my makeup last all day.  It is especially good under my eyes and across my forehead, where those lines and wrinkles and pores tend to hang out.

I used to layer two or three primers – a basic SPF primer, a mattifying primer and a blurring primer – to achieve the same results as I do with just the Dermologica Hydrablur primer.

Price – 22mL $56 at RY Australia (RRP $70)  click to shop at RY Australia

Verdict – I love this product.  My skin looks amazing and it’s saving me money by only using one product at a time.  Would I repurchase? What do you think? That’s a big yes.  Especially when I can get it at RY Australia at a great price!

Multi Priming

RY Australia are all over my primer layering technique.  I didn’t even know it was a thing – it was just something I played around with to obtain the results I wanted.  It’s officially called Multi Priming – check out this RY Australia Multi Priming infographic for more info.
