I absolutely love Book Week at Boyo’s school. The costumes, the reading, the parade, the library displays, the book swap sale to raise money for indigenous literacy … but mainly the focus on reading!
The preparations start early with the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Boyo participated for the first time this year and we were so proud of him for completing his 20 books early, with weeks and weeks to go.
Book Week coincided very nicely this year with Boyo catching the Reading Bug. As he told everyone, it’s a much better bug to get than the diarrhoea bug or the vomiting bug. Don’t you love 9 year old boys?
Last year, Boyo went as a Pokemon character, a source of much stress for his mother with her non-existent sewing skills. Luckily, my creative skills are just fine – I just had to pay someone to stitch it for me!
This year, he went easy on me. Horrid Henry was his character of choice, as illustrated by Tony Ross. I was going to recreate the blue and yellow sweater but Boyo was quite happy with the striped tee shirt already in his wardrobe. Blue jeans were a snap as were yellow-laced trainers. 10 minutes in the op shops located a suitably messy dark brown wig for a fiver (which he decided at the very last minute had to be cut – thank you Boyo!).
He carried his toy guitar and wore a Rock! badge on his tee shirt to dress as Horrid Henry in his guise as rockstar from Francesa Simon’s book Horrid Henry Rocks!
Check out some of the amazing costumes made by some very talented parents. I’m particularly fond of the little Geronimo Stilton who was reading his book whilst parading down the street. Boyo’s teacher made a fine effort – ladies tights for his Peter Pan outfit. Well done! Simply adored the hobbit feet and Skulduggery Pleasant made by the same Gorgeous Girl who was responsible for these fabulous Halloween outfits. Check out the amazing ice crown for Narnia’s Snow Queen made out of soda bottles by another Gorgeous Girl. In awe of such talent!
