Denim with a Twist

Kimba Likes Denim with a Twist! Thinking outside the box for denim with a denim dress, jeggings, denim joggers, cut off denim, and coloured denim @kimbalikes

I absolutely love denim.  It’s the ultimate accessible cool fabric and I consider it to be a wardrobe neutral.  Oh, and stripes and leopard are part of my wardrobe neutrals palette too.

Pretty much everyone wears denim as that wardrobe classic known as jeans – pick a style, any style.  The classic denim jacket has been the epitome of cool for aeons.  Everyone should have these two denim classic pieces in their wardrobe.

But denim is more than just two classic pieces.  A whole heap more!  Denim with a twist is an easy way to add some effortless cool to your wardrobe. I’ve just bought a denim hair accessory.  I’ve previously owned denim shoes (until I broke them and sobbed).  I own the most divine Country Road denim tote, which is just getting better with age as it fades.  Or attains patina, as the style mavens say!

Here’s a few ways I’ve rocked that most classic of fabric lately.  Check out a few of my Denim with a Twist outfits.

Kimba Likes Denim with a Twist ! I've styled Seed Heritage denim joggers with ballet flats, a Katies blouse and a Country Road oversized striped kimono T shirt @kimbalikes

Denim with a Twist | denim joggers

I’m wearing a pair of denim joggers from Seed.  I’ve teamed it with an oversized kimono T shirt from Country Road and patterned Missoni for Target ballet flats for a casual colour pop outfit.

Teamed with a pretty paisley kaftan blouse from Katies^ and coordinating Ferragamo pointed toe ballet flats, the outfit is more feminine.

The elasticated cuffs and drawstring waist make this piece more versatile.  The ankle cuffs can be pushed up and the drawstring waist can be worn lower or on the natural waistline.  Smarter than a pair of track pants but oh so comfortable.  I often travel in these pants.

Denim with a Twist | jeggings

Jeggings is a word which strikes terror into many people.  Very sensible people.  For a good reason.  Jeggings, when they first came out, described a pair of opaque leggings printed to resemble denim.  Absolutely hideous.  However, designers got on board with this concept to turn it into something we’d actually clamour to buy.

I love my denim leggings.  But only the ones made out of actual denim.  Let me run you through the reasons.  The pull on waistband is smoothing and flattering for mummy tummies.  Plus anyone who has just had too many pies.  If you want to layer tops over jeans, jeggings are the way to go.  No annoying belt or buttons to ruin the line.  Buy them in the right size (I usually size down) and you won’t spend all day yanking them up.

But for the love of shoes, please make sure you wear a longer top.  Only a camel podiatrist is interested in checking out camel toe.

I’m wearing Katies Ultimate Slim pants^ teamed with a Metalicus^ fitted tank and Three Parsons broderie anglaise top.  I’ve accessorised with fuchsia Forever New patent flats, a Kenzie Doily Necklace from Vintage Pip and navy leather woven tote from OzSale.*

Kimba Likes Denim with a Twist ! I've styled a Seed Heritage denim shirt dress with Sambag flats and a vintage hat @kimbalikes

Denim with a Twist | Dress

I’ve teamed a Seed shirt dress in a dark chambray denim with a cute vintage hat and pops of colour with fun ballet flats by Sambag and my navy bag from OzSale*.

Wearing a dress can sometimes project an image of being a little more dressed up.  This is great when that’s the effect you’re after.  However, a great way to wear a dress in a more casual manner is to choose a denim dress.  The structured fabric retains its shape well and isn’t clingy.

Kimba Likes Denim with a Twist ! I've styled Brown Sugar coloured denim pants with a Dorothy Perkins sequin detailed sweatshirt and embellished Sambag flats @kimbalikesDenim with a Twist |  coloured denim

Coloured denim is still having a moment.  I love it so that I’d wear it anyway.  I’m too old and confident in my own style to worry about whether something is Hot or Not or In and Out.  Although I would murder an In & Out burger!

I’ve got lots of different coloured denim – as well as patterned denim.  Everything from a pastel floral to a pale pink to a grey ocelot to a fuchsia pink – and pretty much every colour in between.

I’m wearing a pair of Brown Sugar denim pants with ankle zips and angled zipped pockets.  Burgundy (or wine, merlot, marone, maroon … as you will) is traditionally a winter colour.  Which is why I like wearing it in the warmer weather.  As you do.

Teamed with a musk pink marle embellished sweatshirt from Dorothy Perkins and mushroom suede embellished Sambag ballets, I’ve created a comfy yet cute outfit.  I do love little details!

Kimba Likes Denim with a Twist ! I've styled DIY cutoffs from a pair of Karen Walker oversized jeans with a KMart boxy tee and Sambag flats @kimbalikes

Denim with a Twist | denim cutoff shorts

Denim cutoffs are the perfect way to carry over your love for this fine fabric into the summer months.  If I was younger, I’d totally rock my denim cutoff shorts worn over opaque tights with rocking ankle boots.

For this casual weekend day, I’ve teamed my DIY denim cutoff shorts (originally a pair of thrifted Karen Walker jeans that were too short for me), with a KMart boxy tee in a cute polkadot pattern worn oversized.  Sambag ballet flats of neon coral awesomeness make another appearance.

Love denim! It is the best. So easy to wear. You’ve reminded me that I used to have denim shoes too. I wonder what happened to those.ReplyCancel

I know – I do that sometimes too! I was bereft about the loss of a dress that my brother bought me when we had an awesome holiday together a few years ago. I figured I must have accidentally put it into a donate pile. Couldn’t close my bottom drawer this week – opened it and found the dress! And about 10 other items I thought I’d lost. How cool is that!ReplyCancel

You always do denim so well. I’ve only just started reintroducing denim into my wardrobe. I’m thinking that dress or something similar might need to be next.ReplyCancel
