Kimba Likes Fiji Holiday Style | Castaway Island and Radisson Blu Denarau
We had the most amazing holiday in Fiji recently. We had five nights on the blissful Castaway Island and three nights at the buzzy Radisson Blu on Denarau.
The drawback about heading off to islands is the transfer process. A flight from Australia to Nadi Airport on Denarau Island at a reasonable time means you need to overnight before catching the transfer boat the next day. On the return leg, it’s often a long day of travel to pack up, get the early boat to Denarau and then hang at the airport until your afternoon or evening flight,
We opted for an early 6am flight out of Sydney, which was a shockingly early get up, but it meant we reached Castaway Island in the late afternoon, ready for a welcome cocktail!
On our last morning at Castaway, we had a leisurely breakfast then boarded the catamaran back to Denarau. Our suite wasn’t ready so we were very happy to hit a sun lounger poolside until it was!
Spending a few days at a Denarau resort at the end of our trip meant that we had a different experience, with a variety of pools, restaurants and shopping options. Plus on our travel home day, we hung out beside the pool whilst our luggage was looked after by the hotel.
Fiji Holiday Style | Castaway Island
Castaway Island is a small family resort, populated by families big and small, young and old. Although there were a few honeymooners, who’d obviously got lost on their way to an adults only island!
Our days revolved around enjoying the views from our beach bure, hanging out poolside at the adult only pool, eating the delicious food, experiencing the ocean (from my paddling to the Welshman’s snorkelling to the Teenager’s scuba diving) and going for gentle walks around the island.
Being on an included meal plan gave us extra flexibility. We were able to fit our meals in around our activities – whether that be snorkelling, boat trips, scuba diving, sleep ins, massages, kayaking, reading, swimming … Plus we could eat together or just take ourselves off for a snack.
As someone with food allergies, I was impressed at the level of personalised attention I received. I met with one of the chefs, who made a note of what I couldn’t eat, and when ordering meals, they were aware of my requirements. It was fabulous!
We found the weather in April to be warm, with daily temperatures of low to mid 30s. Island breezes kept it refreshing and comfortable, and tamped down the humidity.
Castaway Island is a gorgeous destination for a family, although the standard bures with two parents and three kids would be a bit of a tight squeeze. Lots of things to do, but also the perfect place to do absolutely nothing!
I teamed my Witchery chambray playsuit with my fave Gorman sunnies and reversible sunhat. Perfect Fiji holiday style!
The Teenager celebrated his 14th birthday on Castaway Island. The staff organised him an amazing surprise, complete with cake and birthday song, which had two restaurants joining in on the fun!
I wore my Monika Forsberg x Best Buds dress and hairbow with Saltwater Sandals.
Our final night on Castaway Island was the Fijian Feast event where the staff performed Fijian dances, with a Fijian buffet.
Castaway Island went above and beyond in relation to my food allergies. On the night of the Fijian Feast, they prepared an entire platter of specially prepared Kimba-friendly food, including a bowl of my favourite Fijian kokoda. Colour me impressed!
I wore my Mireia Ruiz x Gorman Puddle Pop dress with Ziera sandals and Fiji holiday style flowers in my hair.
I travelled from Castaway to Denarau in my cute and comfy Gorman Fruity Stickers overalls, teamed with Bohemian Traders tank, Rubi slides and Owns it By Anna hairbow.
Fiji Holiday Style | Radisson Blu Resort, Denarau
After our relaxed island holiday, we headed back to Denarau Island for three nights at the Radisson Blu Resort.
This part of Denarau Island isn’t about the beaches. It’s about the resort lagoon pools, with poolside waiters, and activity pools and gardens.
Radisson Blu do this exceptionally well with four lagoon pools, a water slide, a toddler pool, loads and loads of umbrellas and sun loungers set amongst beautifully layered tropical gardens. Add in six restaurants and an impressive buffet breakfast and it makes for a great spot for a mini getaway.
Personally, I’m not a poolside sun lounger kinda girl. A day or so is good for me, but I couldn’t do a whole week!
The Radisson Blu is being done up at present so some of the rooms are definitely on the tired side. However, this did mean we negotiated a further discount when they were unable to provide us with the suite we had booked.
The Chantara Thai restaurant on site is highly recommended and I’m happy to add my recommendation too. Again, my food allergies weren’t an issue. The Chantara chef and the chef at the main restaurant were both more than happy to make me Kimba-friendly sauces and adjustments to their dishes. This is a rare experience in Sydney so I was very impressed.
For us, it was the perfect spot to give the Teenager some wifi time whilst we had some sunshine poolside time.
For a day spent lounging poolside with the Welshman, I wore my Louvelle headband, Gorman Zissou sunnies (my current favourite pair of sunnies) and a striped Artesands plus size swim dress from The Iconic. Now that’s true Fiji holiday style!
I bought this lovely Elk silk tank (and matching drawstring pants) as a recovery present after my 2015 hysterectomy and endometriosis operation. It is perfect for a summer holiday too, teamed with 17 Sundays chambray shorts and Rubi slides.
Date night at Chantara with the Welshman called for colour! I teamed my Monika Forsberg x Gorman Bungalow dress in Aviary print with Oddspark earrings and Gorman Licorice Twoobs.
Have you been to Castaway on Qualito Island or stayed on Denarau Island in one of the many resorts?
