How to wear a band tee

How to wear a band tee @kimbalikes #kimbalikes

I had an amazing girls night out recently, watching one of my favourite bands Foo Fighters on their Sonic Highways stadium tour.  Of course, I had to have a band tee.  It’s practically compulsory!

Band tees look rocking with denim cutoffs, boots, hi tops, Cons, leather jackets and jeans.  It’s a classic look for a reason  but can sometimes be a bit masculine.

I’m sharing some tips on how to wear a band tee – when you’re a girl and don’t want to look like a teenage boy.  I’m calling it rock chic for rock chicks!

A band tee, hi tops and denim cutoffs is a great look.  I’m sharing how to girl it up a bit.

  • Start with a girl-cut tee.  A scoop neck and a shaped cut add instant girliness.
  • Instead of classic hi tops, try something a little different like printed Converse or a wedge trainer.
  • Add a level of detail to your denim cutoffs. Try a designer distressed finish, a colour, print or trim.
  • A half- or quarter-tuck at the waistband, with the reverse loose helps to define a waist with insouciant cool
  • Opt for a utilitarian bag like a cross body hipster or a detailed backpack for comfort with a twist
  • Girl it up with a tough pretty look by adding a delicately pretty layered necklace or a boho chic crochet hair accessory

You simply cannot go wrong with a band tee and jeans.  Simples.  But sometimes you want to girl it up a bit, right?

  • A classic round neck men’s tee is perfect for these looks, as the other pieces have a feminine edge.
  • Cuff the sleeves if the tee is oversized for a more flattering look.
  • A flat Chelsea boot looks fab with boyfriend jeans with a rolled up cuff.
  • A heeled ankle boot with rocker chic zip detail in a grey works back well with white denim.
  • Add some boho chic with a floral kimono jacket – dress it up with white denim or dress it down with boyfriend jeans.
  • Classic blazer in an unexpected fabric like a floral works with boho chic and dressy casual looks.
  • Push up the blazer sleeves to reveal some skin.  This will help counteract the high necked tee.
  • Define your waist with a half- or quarter-tuck at the waistband
  • Sculptural earrings in rose gold add a feminine yet tough edge to your band tee look
  • A fringed leather bag slung over your shoulder is the perfect boho chic accessory.
  • Rock casual chic with a structured bucket tote with a twist – this tote features a grey felt.
  • A felt hat is the perfect way to add some practical chic to your autumn style.  A more relaxed shape in navy is perfect for boho chic.  Keep it dressy with a more structured black hat.

How to wear a band tee | for a night out

The most glamorous way to rock a band tee is by adding an uber girly skirt, a sexy heel and some ‘tude to carry it off.

  • As the accessories and other pieces are quite detailed, this looks best with a richly coloured tee with a simple graphic.
  • I love a pattern clash but for the Lacy Floral outfit, a printed satin skirt, snakeskin clutch and lace jacket just didn’t need a leopard heel to complete it.
  • The plain black Ballerina Leopard outfit just needs an extra oomph.  Enter the power of leopard with a chic smoking slipper-styled heel.
  • A floaty ballerina style tulle skirt adds instant tough pretty when teamed with the band tee.
  • For added glam, cuff the tee sleeves.
  • Push up the blazer sleeves to reveal some skin.  This will help counteract the high necked tee.
  • Tuck the tee into the skirt.  Lift the skirt and pull the shirt firmly down evenly. Then with the skirt in place, gently pull at the tee above the waist to create a blouson effect.  Or leave it tucked firmly and add a belt for waist cinching magic.
  • A classic zip top clutch adds a chic effect. The textured print adds another layer of glam.

I only have one rule for wearing a band tee – you must listen to (and like) the band in question! As for me, I don’t have any band tees – how terrible is that. I love every single outfit you’ve put together but I am seriously crushing on that black tutu midi skirt. Could I? Should I…?ReplyCancel
