Oh, the Rugby World Cup grand final! What a game! Sadly, I knew the result before I watched it, thanks to overexcitable relatives who couldn’t wait to celebrate with me. Sweet, but the game was on at 3 am our time. One week post-surgery and whacked up on Scooby Snacks? Yeah, 3 am wasn’t happening.
Rugby is a bit special to me. When you grow up in New Zealand, it’s kinda mandatory. The Welshman is from another rugby-loving country. Our first date was a Sunday lunch at a lovely waterfront restaurant and a movie. Panic ensued when we worked out that Sunday was Valentine’s Day. You can’t have a first date on Valentine’s Day – way too much pressure!
We broke the ice by watching rugby at my share house, with beer and pizza on the Friday night. The Welshman referenced this in his wedding speech – he knew I was the perfect girl right then and there!
I was pregnant with Boyo during the 2003 Rugby World Cup. Puggle was the name of our baby bump, and man did he love the World Cup! Every game we went to, he would kick away madly inside me as though I was a rugby ball.
The first time the Welshman ever felt him move was on the day of the grand final, when England thrashed the Wallabies. That’s kinda special, don’t you think?
Here’s a few of my favourite moments of the 2015 final game, from The Guardian

Sonny Bill Williams felt sorry this kid “got smoked by the security guard”. He took him back to his mum and gave him his medal. “Better to be hanging around his neck than mine”
