A few years ago, I posted a series of posts called Smash the Fashion Rules. Many so called “fashion rules” are more about body shaming. I’m all for body positivity, plus I don’t like being told what to do.
Fast forward a few years, and the lovely Jo from iCurvy has kicked off Rule Breakers Club. All about challenging fashion rules and getting out of your comfort zone.
Jo has long championed body positivity and is the anointed Queen of the Inbetweenie Tribe.
iCurvy Rule Breakers Club Insta challenge
Oh, you know how much I love a good style challenge! Jo is hosting a 7 day Instagram style challenge for Rule Breakers Club.
I’m so in.
There are so many fashion rules about stripes and most of them are wrong. I believe that stripes are a neutral (just like denim and leopard) and they go with practically everything. Including stripes.
Don’t be fooled into thinking horizontal stripes make you look bigger than you are. What a load of tosh. I actually think head to toe black, that long held “slimming” colour does a better job of making you look bigger.
fluff and fuzz
Fluffy, furry and fuzzy clothes aren’t something usually worn every day. Why not? Lovely tactile textures deserve more outings.
There is a school of thought that fluffy fabrics can make you appear bigger. Perhaps this is true. I really don’t care because they’re just so much fun to wear!
leggings as pants
Oh dear gods. I’m vehemently against leggings as pants. It’s not a bodyshaming thing – I just don’t need to feel like I’m in a desert, surrounded by a caravan of camels. Many leggings are also a bit thin. I’m sure your knickers are lovely, but I don’t need to see them.
However, ponte pants and proper denim jeggings may have changed my mind. The smoothing waistbands of many of these items should be praised, and the fabric is sufficiently thick to keep you nice.
Life is too short to not wear colour. Especially bright fun colours. Yes, you might stand out. So what? Own that shit and enjoy the attention. To be perfectly honest, people are more likely to notice your cheery smile and confident posture and be drawn to that, rather than the colour you’re sporting.
Don’t just wear your heart on your sleeve. Wear your slogan on your chest. Make a statement with a graphic tee.
I’ll be wearing Ruby & Lilli, obvs.
sequins and sparkle
Glitter, sequins, sparkle used to be reserved for evening wear. Personally, I love nothing more than some daytime sparkle! Why save them for night time. Sparkle like a disco ball in the sunshine!
Leopard is the new neutral. It literally goes with everything, and lends itself beautifully to print clash action too. It used to be considered a little racy, even a little slutty. Oh hell no. Love the leopard? Wear the leopard.
Rule Breakers Club | what I wore
Day 1 | Stripes
I teamed my Jean Paul Gaultier for Target Breton tee with Bohemian Traders plaid utility jacket – I do love a good print clash! My favourite blue suede Hush Puppies got an outing with navy herringbone joggers by Witchery.
Day 2 | Fluff & Fuzz
My fluffy vintage lambskin scarf worked back beautifully with my Three Parsons fluffy feather knit vest. I teamed them with my beloved Hush Puppies, 17 Sundays coated leggings and one of my favourite dresses by Three Parsons.
