Recently, I shared the Fashion Rules that I thought we should smash! I debunked the myths and shared Try on this Trend tips.
My lovely friend Jo – follow her here on Instagram – has been sharing some of her fabulous pattern clashing!
Following on from this, I compiled a list of fashion rules that I really think we just shouldn’t smash. Rules that should remain rules. Rules made NOT to be broken!
I’m going to road test one of these Fashion Rules Thou Shalt Obey as a regular series.
First up, it is SOCKS. WITH SANDALS. Yup. You heard me right. Socks with Sandals. I’m serious!
Check out my Kimba Likes Pinterest board Smashing the Fashion Rules : Socks with Sandals for some more inspiration on how to pull off this tricky trend. And for some definite What Not To Do images!
I’m trying on the trend here with some patterned Gorman socks and lemon yellow Country Road socks with black patent wooden soled Wittner sandals and pink leather heeled Nine West wooden soled sandals.
I’m definitely going to wear the pink sandals with the pastel Gorman printed socks – I’m envisioning pale skinny jeans and my mint fine cotton Sportsgirl oversized jumper. Pastel perfection!
I’m kind of crushing on the black strappy sandals with the lemon sock. I have a very pretty Brown Sugar green print cotton dress that will look just adorable with them.
Hmm, reserving judgement on some of these looks. I think I could definitely rock the black suede mary janes and the dotty socks. I’m thinking paired with navy tights, my Jigsaw woollen full skirt and my Ginger & Smart black cashmere knit tucked in, I could pull this look off.
The patterned Sportsgirl anklets will be getting a workout with covered toe shoes, like the David Lawrence t bars pictured here, teamed with skinny pants or slouchy boyfriend tweed pants.
I think the chunky cream socks and patterned heels might not work for me, and I’m not loving the fishnet and high heel combo. Maybe if I was 22 with legs up to there? At a pinch?
The most important fashion rule is that FASHION IS FUN and rules are made to be broken. I don’t think the socks and sandals look will be rocking my world every day, but when I need a hit of fashion fun, you can guarantee I’ll be hunting in the sock drawer!
The last word has to go to my darling father-in-law. I have long been the lone defender of his penchant for socks and sandals when on holiday, like a proper Pommy tourist, and couldn’t resist gently teasing him by emailing him my socks and sandals image. He got me back a beauty with the following missive:
To become a member of the elite and advanced First Foot you will need to buy a
pair of plus twos which must not be colour co-ordinated in any way with the socks.
You can see why I adore him, can’t you?
Are you prepared to become a member of our Sock it to Me Club? Would you wear socks with sandals? Yes, I quite possibly am mad!
