Uluru Holiday Style | what I wore

Kimba Likes Uluru Holiday Style - what I wore on a long weekend to the Northern Territory #kimbalikes #holidaystyle #uluru #whatIwore

The Welshman’s parents have made the long journey to visit us down under.  They’re a little older, but still retain their sense of adventure – as well as their love of a nice cup of tea and a chat.

A family long weekend trip to Uluru was our destination of choice.  It was the perfect marriage of wild and mild.  Wildly exciting views and scenery.  Mild afternoons of cups of tea, movies and family relaxing.

We spent the mornings breakfasting together, before hitting the red dirt for sightseeing with an adventurous twist.  Followed by afternoons with some hardcore R&R, a dip in the pool and completed by delicious dinners.

I’m going to share our adventures in another post soon – I still cannot get over the sacred power and raw beauty of Uluru and Kata Tjuta.

For Wardrobe Wednesday, it’s all about style.  I’m sharing my Uluru holiday style, plus some packing tips for Red Centre getaways.

Uluru Holiday Style | travel

The week we travelled was slightly cooler than usual for Sydney spring weather.  Comfort is key, with breathable fabrics being my first choice.  I teamed Metalicus soft pants (with the faintest of yellow dots in the pattern) with Ruby & Lilli #OOTD tee.  Super flattering cut and oh so comfortable.  My DKNY distressed denim jacket was close to hand for extra warmth on the plane – I always freeze!

A touch of sports luxe with my Dion Lee for Target kicks, and finally my Alexander McQueen skull print silk chiffon scarf was the perfect finishing touch to my outfit.  I love a pop of colour, and the gorgeous silk is so lovely on the skin.

I streamlined my accessories by choosing a go with everything leather tote that is able to be worn bandolier-style or as a shoulder bag.  I can’t tell you how much I adore my Marc by Marc Jacobs Classic Q Hillier tote.

I rolled with my usual suspects  – Tiffany & Co and Honeydew & Violet sterling silver bangles – added my practical Mimco Jalebee watch with silicon band, Mimco silicon bangle, Uberkate necklace, Windfall Jewellery tiki pendant and simple rose gold ball studs and mini hoops.

To top my outfit off, a simple felt fedora from Her Fashion Box.  Practically uncrushable and chic to boot.

Holiday Style Tip | aim for comfy breathable layers for travel. Select some simple jewellery pieces to mix and match during your trip.  You can always shop locally for fun souvenir pieces.

Uluru Holiday Style | Uluru trip

On the first morning of our trip, I stayed in our room with a poor sick Boyo.  He wasn’t very well at all, bless him.  The Welshman collected his parents and headed out to see the sunrise.

We underestimated just how cold it really is in the desert before the sun has worked its magic.  Don’t feel silly packing shorts and a sunhat along with a ski jacket and beanie!  It is THAT cold.  You WILL need it if you plan to view the sunrise.

Holiday Style Tip | heading out before sunrise? Padded jacket, scarf, beanie? Tick, tick, tick.  It’s cold, dude!

A leisurely (and fabulous!) breakfast, we headed off on our first red dirt adventure.  A scenic car trip to Uluru.

I teamed my Bohemian Traders chambray shorts with Boom Shankar silk cotton double layered top.  I tucked one layer in and left the other loose.

Loving the shorts – they look like you’re wearing a skirt but keep you nice on a windy day!  The adjustable elastic waistband means they’re versatile – wear them on your waist or pull them low on your hips.  I aimed for somewhere in the middle – using the waistband as a tummy smoother.

I added my St Frock wool felt hat for shade, my Ziera leather and mesh trainers for comfort and my Three Parsons cape jacket for warmth.  My Mimco shades coordinate with my pretty printed top.

Holiday Style Tip | embrace print clash! Far more fun than packing a whole bag full of neutrals.  Make it work by keeping it tonal and teaming with neutrals.  Alternatively, pick a colour palette and pack items in those shades.

In the evening, we headed out for sunset viewing at Uluru.  Luckily, a much warmer experience than sunrise!

I layered my Bohemian Traders sweater over my Rockmans boyfriend skinnies; added a Katies scarf and my Three Parsons cape jacket. I accessorised with an Aboriginal design handpainted wooden hair clip, and a super cute Boyo.  He’s rocking a Skater HQ cap, plus Angry Birds sweatshirt and drop crotch trackies from H&M.

Holiday Style Tip | it’s better to be warm than stylish. Pop all your layers on if need be.  Rock it with attitude and it will look like a stylish decision, not a clothing emergency!

Uluru Holiday Style | Kata Tjuta

For a trip to the truly awe inspiring Kata Tjuta, I needed my outfit to be comfy and provide support and ease of movement.  Our trip coincided with my PMS week, meaning I was very sore and swollen, and walking is often painful.

The perfect opportunity to debut my Bohemian Traders utility shorts from Styling You Shop.  I teamed them with a striped fitted GAP light sweatshirt and DKNY denim jacket.  A Hound + The Hare hairbow kept my hair vaguely under control on a very windy day – I gave up on a hat!

Holiday Style Tip | oversized shorts and sensible trainers make for ease of comfort when walking

For a romantic dinner date with the Welshman (plus his parents and Boyo – so romantic!), I pressed my Three Parsons cape jacket into service yet again.  It works back beautifully with the Sportsgirl dusty pink maxi skirt, don’t you think?  I added a Dion Lee for Target black sleeveless knit.

A pair of gold hair clips by Bando from the Art Gallery shop (aren’t they always the best!) added a little sparkle.  My Aboriginal-design handpainted seed bracelet had to be worn too.  I love buying accessories as holiday souvenirs.

Holiday Style Tip | buy locally-decorated accessories as souvenirs. You will get lots of use out of them and they will remind you of your fabulous trip every time you wear them.

Uluru Holiday Style | homeward bound

Kimba Likes Uluru Holiday Style - what I wore on a long weekend to the Northern Territory #kimbalikes #holidaystyle #uluru #whatIwore

On our final morning in Uluru, we had our farewell leisurely breakfast, and headed to the local markets for some shopping.  We were lucky to find the exact artwork we had seen being painted by Aboriginal artist Rosemary Armstrong the day before at our afternoon dot painting workshop.

Can’t wait to share it in my Uluru travel tips post!  We also bought a gorgeous carved wooden lizard.

I layered a Boom Shankar embroidered cotton sleeveless swing top under a Mix Apparel chambray shirt, added comfy Rockmans boyfriend skinnies, and Ziera sandals.  My lace hairbow was purchased on our QT date night minibreak – sensibly I chose to go shopping rather than to the day spa!

Holiday Style Tip | a chambray shirt is a great substitute for a cardigan

Super pleased with my packing!  The only things I didn’t wear were a Verily maxi dress, a Harlow T shirt and a pair of GAP boyfriend denim cutoffs.  The weather was cooler than we had expected, so there just wasn’t the opportunity to wear them.

Unfortunately, this meant the unheated pool never got warm enough for me to bust out my togs.  Fortunately, it significantly reduced the number of flies.  I know which option I preferred!

Uluru Holiday Style | Beauty Tips

The NT is very drying – all that desert air.  Pack a hair masque, extra strength night serum to layer under your usual night skincare regime, and a facial oil to layer under your daily skincare.  You can also press a little onto your face with your palms during the day.

Do not forget sunscreen, and insect repellent.  Spraying my hat made all the difference!

Have you ever visited the Red Centre?

Hi! Sorry for commenting on an old post but I really loved your outfits! Especially the ootd for the last day! You look amazing 🙂

I’ll be going to Uluru in end may and I’m fretting over what to wear. Can I check with you the right temperature estimates when you were there? May estimates would be 15-20 in the daytime but I’m not sure if it would feel colder or warmer because of the wind/sun/openness! I’m planning to wear a Long sleeved shirt, hoodie and denim jacket in the day time. Would that be okay? Thanks! XxReplyCancel
