Circus Dressups
The Welshman and I aren’t very big fans of costume parties.  We don’t mind a bit of a glamour night out and getting dressed up, but we’re not quite so fond of dress ups.  However, most of our friends are costume party fanatics and Boyo’s school holds a fabulous fundraiser every year involving, you guessed it, a costume party around a fantastic theme.

Circus was this year’s theme, complete with sideshows and guests ranging from sideshow carnies to clowns to ringmasters to strong men to lion tamers to an organ grinder and his monkey and rather a lot of sexy vintage-styled burlesque costumes.  The Welshman didn’t mind them at all.

One of my favourite costumes was a fabulous woman dressed in a fabulous Roman costume.  It escaped a few people, but I was delighted to get the reference straight off.  All that reading pays off eventually.  She was dressed as Juvenal, a Roman poet who wrote The Satires.  Ever made reference to bread and circuses?  You can thank Juvenal for that quote!

The fabulous parent band, Parental as Anything,  played another stellar gig.  Their performance was as good as their name.  Still a bit proud of that naming effort!

Check out some of the amazing circus costumes!

Top marks to the Welshman, my lovely lady love.  He knocked it out of the park dressed as the Bearded Lady, taking out the prize for Best Dressed Man.  I’m afraid his collar didn’t match his cuffs.  I liken his look to the lovechild of Hagrid and Jayne Mansfield.  What do you think?

Frocktober 31
You might recognise the dress from Frocktober last year.  I wore it all day, as dared by the lovely Catherine from Cup of Tea and a Blog.  I stood up at morning lines at Boyo’s school, in an attempt to explain why I was wearing a wedding dress and inadvertently triggering lots of questions about what exactly ovaries were.  I attended a PR event for Target.  I went trick or treating with Boyo.  All dressed  in my wedding dress.  All in the name of charity and raising money for ovarian cancer research.

Wardrobe Wednesday Circus Costume Party
To create my circus peacock costume, I pulled together lots of bits and pieces.  I borrowed a fabulous pink feather clip from Mint Condition Vintage Boutique in Rozelle.  Isn’t that lovely!  I tacked a feathered headband from the clearance rack at Sportsgirl onto my trusty tiara – last worn as Elizabeth Taylor at the Rozcars.  I thrifted a brand new Bracewell sequinned peacock top for $6, teamed with a silvery grey tutu, Leona Edmiston peacock blue tights and peachy pink ballet flats from Dotti.  I added an embellished lavender cuff, colourful beaded earrings, and an enamel flower and pearl necklace.

My tutu was purchased two years ago from a Peter Alexander ex-store display for an absolute bargain.  I just couldn’t resist the sheer prettiness of it and knew I would press it into service one day.  It was a slightly odd trip home on the bus carrying a tutu.  As you do!

Although I’m not a fan of costume parties, I just love the opportunity to go a bit cray cray with my makeup.  The best thing about creating a costume look is that shadow fallout isn’t a problem! My eye makeup covered my entire lid, up over my green brow, and under my eye region.  I added some amazing feather lashes and gave myself beautiful luminous glowing skin with lots of luminiser.

Are you a costume party fan?

I love your outfit and that the Welshman wore a dress! I love a bit of dress up and used to really get into the spirit at work every book week. My little one keeps inviting me to put on one of her tutus and dance. Unfortunately they’re not quite mum’s size. Looks like I’ll be getting me a tutu, hmmm what colour? Jo xxReplyCancel

Well, I’ve actually never been to a costume parry…except for halloween, but it looks like you had a great time! I love your lashes…were they comfortable to wear? Was your hubby wearing your dress?ReplyCancel

    • Kim-Marie from Kimba Likes - 26 March 2014 - 8.28 pm

Hey Merrie! Halloween is getting bigger and bigger over here. In fact, last Halloween I wore that dress as a vampire bride! Yes, it is my dress. I did Frocktober where I wore a different dress every day to raise money for Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation. I was dared to wear a wedding dress on the last day for $100 donation. Couldn’t find a cheap enough dress nor one that fitted, so I bought this one for $10. I’m about an Australian 12, this dress was 22. I took the back panels in by folding them in. A completely mad day but pleased to raise money for charity! It worked brilliantly as his dress, with the panels let out. So proud of him!ReplyCancel

They seem to go in cycles – 40ths and 50ths are our thing at the moment. Annoys me how much they can cost though and usually unwearable again!ReplyCancel

  • Vanessa - 26 March 2014 - 1.58 pm

I love a costume party! Any chance to dress up and have fun gets a big tick in my book. Congrats to the Welshman for his much deserved win – I think you described his genetic heritage perfectly. Love your outfit too and well done for putting it together. All class. xReplyCancel

  • Johanna - 26 March 2014 - 11.05 am

For someone who doesn’t like dress-ups, I think you do a jolly fine job – and I must say you and the Welshman look spectacular! I hate costume parties. The last one we went to I was meant to go as Agnetha from Abba with friends dressed as the others. Gah, I looked like some dreadful over made up parody out of a horror movie and the others totally rocked it! Thanks for the linkie 🙂ReplyCancel

  • Vicki - 26 March 2014 - 7.31 am
